M’akola Development Services (MDS) is working with Nanaimo Affordable Housing (NAHS) to develop a new mixed-use development comprised of affordable, independent housing units and commercial space.

The proposed development will consist of a six‐story residential building with slab on grade and suspended slab on the second floor. It will be geared towards seniors in the region and will include a total of 159 units, with a mix of studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom units. The ground floor will have a commercial kitchen, dining area, and activity space for the residents, while the remaining floors will have residential units. Construction is currently underway, and it is anticipated the building will open in early 2021.

To date, MDS has secured federal and provincial funding for the project, prepared a full proforma including a capital and operating budget, and procured the full design consulting team, including a construction manager. MDS is responsible for contract management, supporting all municipal approval processes, and other permit processes as required.
