Netsamaat Winter Wellness Challenge

Netsamaat  We are all One

M’akola Group of Societies partnered with the Songhees Nation, Esquimalt Nation and 24/7 Youth Empowerment Society which was made possible through a generous grant from the  First Nations Health Authority’s Winter Wellness Challenge.

The Winter Wellness Challenge was hosted on December 16th, 2014 at the Songhees Wellness Centre from 4:00pm – 6:00pm. It was a one day event featuring traditional dance, fun community activities and serving of various Indigenous foods, prepared by the Songhees First Nation. We encouraged families and individuals of all ages attend, including children and Elders. The 120 participants were given a t-shirt upon completion of the Winter Wellness Challenge and were encouraged pledge to:

  • Engage in wellness activities
  • Nurture their spirit
  • Eat healthy foods

The feedback given from the participants stated the following (only 63 participated in the survey):

  • 81% self-identified as First Nations while 19% were non-First Nation
  • Six Nations attended ; Songhees, Esquaimalt, T’Sou-ke, Tsawout, Pauqachin and Metis
  • 15-30 years olds had the highest representation of 36%
  • 77% stated they enjoyed all activities; especially the traditional dance and healthy meal
  • 100% stated they would like to see more events
