M’akola Development Services (MDS) worked with Toquaht Nation on a plan to fulfil their future housing needs in Macoah, BC. MDS assisted the Nation in putting together a housing asset management plan and database, pre-development for six units of rental housing (construction complete) and build capacity for their newly formed Toquaht Housing Authority.
Mentorship and capacity building were important components to this project. MDS helped Toquaht gain experience in-house to continue future phases, including the creation of a community centre and market housing. Engagement with the community was also an important aspect of this project, which was done through information sessions held at quarterly People’s Assemblies.
Macoah is a remote town with ten homes on the shores of Barkley Sound, 30 kilometers from Ucluelet. Through this project, the team is building on the successes, including getting electricity in 2009, a water treatment facility in 2013, a community sewage in 2016, and internet in 2016.
