CULTURAL & COMMUNITY IMPACT
Supportive housing for those at risk of or experiencing homelessness
M’akola Development Services (MDS) is working as a development consultant with Snuneymuxw First Nation (SFN) for a supportive housing project at 355 Nicol Street, Nanaimo BC. SFN is leading the project & will operate the building once complete.
Snuneymuxw teachings remind us to live in a sacred way — to walk as our Ancestors did, with family at the heart and community as our strength. Guided by Snuneymuxw teachings, and rooted in respect, connection, and care for the land, 355 Nicol will provide supportive, culturally safe, and trauma-informed housing for equity-denied community members.
355 Nicol Street is funded through the provincial Supportive Housing Fund in partnership with BC Housing and involves a long-term lease and operating agreement between SFN, BC Housing, and the City of Nanaimo. 355 Nicol Street will offer 35 studio units of supportive housing with in-house supports for those at risk of or experiencing homelessness in the City of Nanaimo, with priority given to SFN members.
