CULTURAL & COMMUNITY IMPACT
Women’s transition and second stage housing

M’akola Development Services (MDS) is working as a development consultant with Snuneymuxw First Nation (SFN) for a women’s transition & second-stage housing project in Nanaimo BC. SFN is leading the project & will be an operating partner for the building once complete.

Snuneymuxw teachings remind us to live in a sacred way — to walk as our Ancestors did, with family at the heart and community as our strength. Guided by Snuneymuxw teachings, and rooted in respect, connection, and care for the land, Cedar Woman House will provide supportive, culturally safe, and trauma-informed housing for women and their children.

Cedar Woman House Phase 2 is funded by the Province of BC’s WTHF in partnership with BC Housing and involves a long-term lease and operating agreement between SFN and BC Housing. The building will offer residents a mix of studio to 3-bedroom units with communal and childcare space, with priority given to SFN members. Cedar Woman House P2 is fully staffed and goes beyond providing safe shelter for women and children – its shared space and programming will empower the women & children to connect, heal, and live together as one community.
